Baloncesto y Sol

May 18, 2010

We have known for a little bit that the Cowboys would be playing in the Cancun Challenge this winter but now it is official. The AP in the Casper Star Tribune reports:

The Wyoming men’s basketball team will compete in a tournament next season that will include a trip to Cancun, Mexico.

The Cancun Challenge is scheduled for Nov. 23-24.

The eight-team tournament field is still being finalized but so far Missouri, Providence, LaSalle, North Florida and Morgan State are currently scheduled to compete with the Cowboys.

The tournament will feature two divisions with Wyoming, Missouri, Providence and LaSalle in one division.

All eight teams playing in the challenge will play a pair of games on campus sites before traveling to Cancun. The Cowboys will play two games in Laramie. Dates and times of those games, as well as the entire 2010 Cowboy basketball schedule, will be announced at a later date.

This news is good for the basketball team on two fronts. First of all, the weather in Cancun in November is sure to beat Laramie’s so that should be nice for the fans who wish to follow the team down south. Secondly, possible games against Missouri, Providence, Morgan State and LaSalle should be a boost to our strength of schedule. Not sure that matters much because last year we had a very weak non-conference schedule but still managed to lose games to very bad teams (South Dakota State, Hampton and Monmouth).

I would like to see a team like Missouri come play at the AA but I have a feeling it will be LaSalle and Providence who come to Laramie instead. That would be too bad as I would like to see better teams or at least bigger schools even if they are not any good at BB come play here. Last year we had one marginally good team come play here in Akron and they are not a bigger school from a known conference. It would be nice to see a crummy team from a good conference come play here like Penn State, or Oregon or something.
