What Could Have Been……

April 9, 2010

Before Tom Burman hired Heath Schroyer as head basketball coach, he interviewed Sam Houston State coach Bob Marlin. At the time I was a big supporter of Marlin and thought he was best for the job. Schroyer obviously got the job because he was Burman’s crony dating back to their days together at Portland State and what have we got since then? Schroyer over three years is 41-53 including a dismal 15-33 in conference play. Marlin on the other hand went 66-27 during that same time period. Now Sam Houston’s conference is not nearly as good as the Mountain West but the bottom line is Marlin can coach. You don’t have to take my word for it, check out what Andy Katz of ESPN has to say about Marlin’s recent hiring by the University of Louisiana at Lafayette:

Out: Robert Lee

In: Bob Marlin

The move: Marlin was a huge hit at Sam Houston State, where he was consistently putting the Bearkats at the top of the Southland Conference. Lafayette is a solid hoops market and there’s no reason the Ragin’ Cajuns can’t contend in the Sun Belt. This was one of the best hires of the carousel.

Important step: Just get players. Marlin can coach them without a problem.
